The State Flag of Alaska (The Last Frontier)
What countries do we (the U.S.) share international borders with? Canada, yep. Mexico, yep. And.... Russia. Its hard for us to think of Russia as a neighbor, but its true... off the coast of the last island in Alaska is our neighbor Russia.
Alaska entered the Union on Jan. 3, 1959, as the 49th state. The wild grandeur of Alaska has fascinated people for several hundred years. Its economy, traditionally dominated by the exploitation of natural resources, entered a new phase in 1977, when production of petroleum began at the vast Prudhoe Bay oil field on the Arctic coast. The name of the state is derived from an Aleut word meaning ìmainland.î
Alaska's flag was designed by a 13 year-old boy! It has 8 stars on a dark blue field. Seven of the stars make the big dipper (the Great Bear - symbolizing strength) and the other star is the North Star - because Alaska is the northern most state.
Our version of this flag is made of light-weight polyester for durability and is 3' by 5'.
Need some space? Alaska, our largest state, is the 48th most populous (just over 1/2 a million)... plenty of room to get away from it all... I gotta get there one of these days! |
